Imagine being caught off guard by sudden, powerful storms that can cause destruction within minutes—this is exactly the reality facing residents in parts of South Africa right now. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued official warnings about severe thunderstorms that are expected to hit three provinces, bringing with them the potential for dangerous winds, heavy rainfall that could lead to flooding, fierce lightning, and sizable hail. And here's where it gets controversial: some might question the urgency of such warnings, but the risks are real, and preparedness could make all the difference.
On Tuesday, the central Northern Cape, the far northeastern regions of the Western Cape, and numerous inland zones of the Eastern Cape were placed under a Yellow Level 2 warning, signifying a high likelihood of severe weather events. These warnings serve as critical alerts, urging residents to stay alert and take preventative steps to protect themselves and their property.
Specifically, in the Northern Cape, towns like Upington, Prieska, and De Aar are forecasted to be heavily impacted. Meanwhile, in the Eastern Cape, at least 19 local municipalities, including areas such as Dr Beyers Naude, Raymond Mhlaba, Blue Crane Route, Enoch Mgijima, Amahlathi, Elundini, Sundays River Valley, Inxuba Yethemba, and Senqu, are expected to experience these intense storms.
The SAWS has provided some important safety advice to minimize risks: patients are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from metal objects which can conduct electricity, secure loose items before thunderstorms arrive, and most importantly, stay clear of tall structures like trees and lamp posts that could be struck by lightning. Additionally, activities such as fishing or playing golf are discouraged during storms since fishing rods and golf clubs are conductive and pose a danger of electrocution.
Adding to the warning, a Yellow Level 1 alert has been issued for regions in the central southern part of the Northern Cape and the northeastern parts of the Western Cape, indicating that damaging winds are also expected in these areas.
