Severe Weather Alert: Southern States brace for more tornadoes and flash floods

The Deep South is in for another round of severe thunderstorms, including tornadoes and flash flooding, on Saturday. This comes as multiple tornadoes have already caused damage across several states this week. As of 11:42 AM on January 10, 2026, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect for over 8 million Americans in parts of Alabama and Georgia until Saturday evening.

The severe weather threat is expected to peak in the morning and afternoon, with active storms already reported over parts of Mississippi. The main concern will be the potential for damaging winds, tornadoes, and large hail during these hours. The threat will gradually diminish later in the afternoon and early evening, but rain will continue to move east and northeast, bringing more heavy precipitation.

Another round of heavy rain is likely, with the potential to inundate areas already affected by previous storms. This could result in an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain across the South, with localized areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee experiencing up to 3 to 4 inches. Rainfall is expected to start in Philadelphia at 11 a.m., New York City after 12 p.m., and Boston and further up the I-95 corridor later in the afternoon, continuing through much of the day across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

On the northern side of the storm, some light snow could be seen in Chicago on Saturday morning, but it will clear before the NFL Wild Card Matchup in the evening. Parts of Wisconsin and Michigan may experience 3 to 6 inches of fresh snow, while northern New England could see a dusting of snow and up to a tenth of an inch of ice.
