Yamaha's MotoGP V4 Engine: Power Struggles and Future Prospects
The Yamaha V4 MotoGP engine has faced challenges during the pre-season test at Sepang, leaving the brand in a position of reflection. Despite Yamaha's efforts, the engine's power output has been a concern, impacting the team's performance.
The Iwata-based manufacturer's struggles were evident in Malaysia, where they finished last among MotoGP's five manufacturers, trailing the outright pace by over a second. The test highlighted Yamaha's challenges, with star rider Fabio Quartararo breaking his finger in a crash, forcing him to withdraw and return home for medical checks. The team's issues were further compounded when they sat out the entire Wednesday due to safety concerns and engine investigations, affecting both Quartararo and Pramac rookie Toprak Razgatlioglu.
Yamaha's sporting manager, Maio Meregalli, acknowledged the engine's weakness, stating, 'The area that we have to improve the most is power because the bike is rideable and the balance is good.' The bike's performance was satisfactory, but the engine's lack of power was a significant hurdle.
Pramac team manager Gino Borsoi shared a similar sentiment, noting the bike's competitiveness from a chassis perspective. However, he also emphasized the need for top speed improvements, which Yamaha is actively addressing.
Yamaha's V4 prototype had previously faced challenges, with test rider Augusto Fernandez unable to fully explore its potential due to the engine's 'safe mode' operation. Even in Sepang, the team's running was limited by a lack of spare parts and replacement engines.
Despite these constraints, Yamaha managed to complete its test program, aided by previous week's shakedown test. The team is now focused on an updated engine specification to enhance straight-line performance, but the timeline for its introduction remains uncertain.
Meregalli expressed satisfaction with the test's productivity, highlighting the evaluation of key components. However, the fine-tuning of settings will be postponed to the Buriram test, indicating ongoing work to address the engine's power issues.
