In a heartwarming display of sportsmanship, Zeynep Sönmez came to the rescue of a struggling ballkid during her surprising victory against the 11th seed, Ekaterina Alexandrova, in the first round of the Australian Open on Sunday.
Set against the backdrop of the vibrant Melbourne sun, the match took an unexpected turn when a ballkid suddenly lost her balance and fell near the umpire’s chair while Sönmez was serving in the ninth game of the second set.
Without hesitation, the 23-year-old Turkish qualifier raised her hand to pause the match, showcasing her commitment not only to the game but also to the well-being of those around her. She quickly approached the young ballkid, wrapping an arm around her waist and guiding her towards a shaded area, indicating a genuine concern for her health.
As tournament officials promptly stepped in to assist, Sönmez lifted the ballkid into a nearby chair, allowing medical staff to evaluate and care for her in a cooler spot. It appeared that the incident was related to the heat, with temperatures hovering around 29 degrees Celsius (84 degrees Fahrenheit), which can feel significantly hotter on the exposed hard court surface.

Sönmez, currently ranked 112th in the world, managed to break serve during that game; however, she lost the set before regaining her momentum to ultimately win the match with scores of 7-5, 4-6, and 6-4—marking her first advancement to the second round of this prestigious tournament.
